Mr. Skorut's richly colored and contemplative landscapes contain elements of traditional formalism, but his process is far from traditional. Andrzej's tools include brushes, sticks, textured fabrics, and anything else that might help him achieve surface interest. "I believe in importance of the immediate visual impact of a painting; that one square inch of the painting should hold as much interest as the whole canvas," Skorut remarks. "Yet I also believe that deeper, honest meanings should lie beneath the surface, giving the viewer an opportunity to embark upon a personal voyage of discovery."
Andrzej was born in Krakow, Poland in 1969, and after receiving his early art education at the Liceum Sztuk Plastycznych School of Art, he emigrated to the Utah and received his BFA from the University of Utah in 1995. Using a wide variety of materials and a broad repertoire of skills, he layers his canvases with abstracted and energetic marks until a serene, representational image emerges. "Although my paintings initially appear to be simple landscapes, further study shows them to be as abstract as they are representational," Andrzej comments. "It is this combination that inspires me."
Andrzej was named "an artist to watch" in the November 2004 issue of Southwest Art, and has subsequently been swamped with commissions for collectors from all over the United States.
