Looking closely at glass sculpture

Glass changes with its surroundings. The color of a background, the direction of light and a shift in viewpoint can reveal an opening, a reflective passage or a detail within a surface. Consider the full object as well as its image.

Form and viewpoint

Compare open geometric forms with modeled heads, birds and branching arrangements. A freestanding object may present a different silhouette from each side, while a wall composition can spread its rhythm across a wider field. Ask the gallery about the views and details of a specific work.

Color and light

Saturated and translucent passages play different roles in these works. Look at the transitions between colors, the edges of an opening and any shadow or reflection beneath the sculpture. Photographs provide a starting point for a conversation about seeing the object in person.

Materials and display

Some works combine glass with bronze, other supporting materials or feathers. Read the individual artwork record rather than assuming every part of a work is glass. Confirm the dimensions and discuss appropriate support, placement and viewing with the gallery.
